Riina Talvikki

This exhibition tells a story of imagined life forms that have evolved as a result of environmental pollution and annihilation, following the sixth mass extinction. It tells the story of creatures of the night, alien species, and the descendants of destruction who inherit and take over the Earth after humans destroy it. Evolution, mutation, a new life form is born. The exhibition is a poetic sci-fi story about the beauty of nature and its transformation into something alien to us.

Riina Talvikki is a visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland. She works with moving image, ceramics, and various materials and objects, combining them into installations. At the core of her artistic work are ecological themes and the changes in nature caused by human activity. Her previous works have dealt with anthropocentric worldview, consumer society and people’s indifference to their own environment and inability to make changes.

Over the past two years, she has been working on a series of ceramic sculptures that draw references to animal and human anatomy, as well as horror and science fiction films. She has built a landscape in the gallery, which includes ceramic sculptures as well as other materials and a new video piece. The soundscape of the exhibition is created in collaboration with sound designer Juhana Heiskanen.
