Antti Tolvi
One-on-one performance
13.-16.6.2024
All our senses are ultimately based on our sense of touch. The sense of touch is the first to which life has begun to sense its surroundings. The body has slowly cultivated this sensation, e.g. sense of smell (we feel odor molecules in our nostrils), taste (we feel things in our mouth), hearing (we feel the vibration of the air/earth), sight (we feel amount of photons and their wavelength) etc. We even experience our emotions physically in our body. In other words, we are driven just by sence of different touchs.
The word instrument means a device with which we can measure, convert and produce things. We can see our body mind as a kind of very sensitive, living instrument that resonates based on the prevailing conditions.
In this minimal one-on-one piece, composer/sound artist Antti Tolvi plays this holistic instrument, e.g. with sounds, tastes, colors, qualitis, movements of air, timbre, touch and thoughts.
The piece begins by lying down in a low-frequency sonic bed built by Tolvi. When lying in sonic bed, we don’t experience music so much with our ears. Rather, the piece lands to us as bodily sensations. Sonic bed helps us open up to new dimensions of listening. We can start listening to our body sensations as if they were music. From here we continue to one-on-one performance that suggests that we open up to listen everything what happens inside and outside of us, as whole.
Tolvi’s one-on-one performances have been successfully been part of e.g. one-on-one art festival Kehä in Oulu 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2023, Finfringe Turku 2020, New performance Turku 2021, Titanik gallery 2022 and Tehdasfestivaali Turku 2022.
“My artistic practice has been centered around just listening for about 20 years. By just listening, I don’t just mean listening with the ears, but listening with the whole being, both inside and outside of the body. Practicing listening also inseparably includes practicing relaxation. We cannot hear very sensitivily anything if our mind is fixed somewhere. In other words: In my practice, I pay attention to human nature, while being sensitive to the special features of space and form.”
Kone Foundation has supported Antti Tolvi´s work.
Duration of the piece is 25 minutes
