Matti Pikkujämsä’s Variations solo exhibition reflects the secrets and charms of repetition. All the works in the exhibition have been born from careful observation, questions, and variation; from the passion and joy of drawing and painting every day.

“I got a cold in the fall. I drank hot lemon and honey tea, and drew lemons for a couple of weeks. The same lemon. I changed its position a bit. I stared and studied the sheen of the surface, the small point-like holes, the colour of the shadow. I thought about Monet and his question “What colour is it really?”. And Kaskipuro, whom I had managed to forget. The subject was an excuse to start drawing. I drew, listened to music, and got into a meditative, euphoric state.

Exploring the surface, the drawing dots and lines, turned into a mantra-like rhythm. Same lemon, new day. The variables are a slightly new kind of light, a new state of mind and changing music. Just a lemon and a sketchbook, without unnecessary meanings and associations. After two weeks, I could still draw, but the lemon was already starting to smell. I threw it in the bio waste. I was better, the sketchbook was full too.” – Matti Pikkujämsä
