KAISA KAANELA: Pattern
KAISA KAANELA: Pattern
11.11 – 30.11.2023 | Gallery G12
A warm welcome to the opening of the exhibition on Friday 10.11. from 17:00 to 19:00!
The “Pattern” exhibition is a continuation of the exhibitions “Rhythm” (2019) and “Surface” (2021).
The works in the exhibition have started from a visual idea, where the working of the material and the creation of the form are linked. The shape of the painting is an important part of the creation and design process of the painting. In my works, I use pieces, holes, gaps and the challenging shapes of the traditional, rectangular painting base.
In my paintings, time is layered and past and future overlap. On the one hand, I work looking forward, on the other hand, I scratch out elements hidden under layers of paint, things from the past. I often find something already forgotten, which in a later connection takes on new meanings.
As I work, the subject slowly deepens, the color scheme develops and different shaped bases challenge me to create something new.
A painting is a story made up of layers, lines and scratches. For me, painting bases are layers of thoughts and events. When I work, I let the process guide me forward.
The working time for my works is long: many months.
For me, the painting base is a three-dimensional object, a sculpture. In addition to the sense of sight, I use the sense of touch to realize my paintings.
Sometimes I handle soles with a ronkist too. I build a colored mass on the surface of the work, which I work on by sanding, scraping and dissolving away. Layers of color are revealed underneath. The essence, mass and shape of the color interact with each other. In my new paintings, I use stencils and create sharp, graphic patterns.
