Purl is a media installation in which various events that produce light and sound overlap, rhythmically vibrating, buzzing and twirling. Physical objects represent digital reproductions. Real acts simulate artificial events. Something vague is gurgling between meanings and hollow references, something is bubbling.

The exhibition features kinetic sculptures, sound, text and live video. By nature, the works are playful studies of themselves, like self-sufficient portraits. For example, the works play audio and video material of their own creation process or live footage of a specific detail. Some of the elements are sort of performances or events produced with the help of motors, speaker elements and other equipment. The audio material comes from recorded performative experiments or sounds generated by the works.

Mika Kiviniemi is an Oulu-based performance and media artist. His background is in the field of performing arts. In recent years, Kiviniemi has produced multidisciplinary performance and media artworks and exhibitions both alone and as part of a working group. Kiviniemi graduated from Aalto University’s Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art master’s program in 2022. He had his first solo exhibitions in 2022.

Thank you
The Arts Promotion Centre Finland, the Finnish Cultural Foundation’s North Ostrobothnia Regional Fund and the City of Oulu have supported the production of the works and the organization of the exhibition.
