Janus has two faces.
It’s a spell, or a curse:

a flash of lightning
split the tree

like the cannon Calvino’s Viscount.
and thus:
they must live interdependently,
in a haunting comparative.

The God of transformations,
outlines, and duality
always has both directions

and two

simultaneous images.

Everybody wanted to know,
which one was Romulus
and which one was Remus.
– Which is the good,
and which is the evil twin.

phantasma is a joint exhibition by Elina Nissinen & Iida Nissinen at MAA-tila project space 2.-19.3.2023.
Sound work for the exhibition by sound artist Jussi Hertz.
Opening on Wednesday 1.3. at 18–21.

Elina Nissinen (b. 1991) is a visual artist working with clay and paint but also with other materials, people, and spaces. They are fascinated by questions on relationalities, narrativity, and meaning-making, as well as the overlap of intersectional approach with the matter(s) and manifestations of magic.

Iida Nissinen (b. 1991) is a multidisciplinary artist and curator.
Currently Nissinen studies avatars, doppelgängers and eco-gothic sensualities. They work with a variety of materials, elements and situations from text, bioplastics, and ceramics to bodies and social compositions.

Nissinens share but a life lived side by side, also an interest in vibrant materiality, magic in the mundane, and the agencies of the invisible world at large. Phantasma is their first joint exhibition as a duo.

The project is kindly supported by the Paulo Foundation and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
