at the Kanneltalo Gallery

The exhibition and event complex combines installation, performance and community art workshop, moving at the interface between visual arts and crafts.

The name of the exhibition is a reference to Josef Albers’ (1888–1976) series “Homage to the Square”, in which he studied the interaction of colours. Colours, their interaction and expressive power are also studied at Kanneltalo.

In addition to colour, the central theme of the exhibition and events is the connection between crafts and art. The question is how the craftsmanship and soft materials affect the interpretation, meaning and associations of the work. Can a soft, crocheted work be an aesthetic or emotional experience without aa useful purpose, and can you wrap yourself inside a work of art? The exhibition highlights everyday knowledge, the beauty of crafts and respect for our grandmothers’ legacy.

The exhibition is accompanied by two performances that approach the craftmanship, movement and repetitive rhythm of crocheting as gestures and conscious tributes to everyday life, art, beauty and grandmothers:
Sat 17 September at 2 p.m.
Sat 1 October at 2 p.m.

The community art workshops are part of the “Homage to the Granny Square” exhibition. Everyone is welcome to participate in the crochet workshops, regardless of their skill level. The workshop participants will be taught how to crochet a grandmother square. Those who already know how to crochet can enjoy the communal, inspiring and beautifully organized environment. There will be five free community art workshops:
Sat 10 September at 12 noon–3 p.m.
Wed 14 September at 4–7 p.m.
Wed 21 September at 4–7 p.m.
Sat 24 September at 12 noon–3 p.m.
Wed 28 September at 4–7 p.m.
