When I was walking to our first meeting in Kaisaniemi, I found a small branch of a plastic plant on the street. To me that finding said: keep on with this topic.

For a few years now I have been researching the phenomenon of artificial tropical, which is surprisingly widespread in Finland. I search for sites that simulate and represent the tropics. Theoretically I apply the concept of tropicality. It depicts a centuries-old western view of tropical as an environmental other to temperate.

At the same time, I am searching for how I could work without pushing, how to know and unpack what I thought I knew, how to use words that would get close, how to be as I am.

I guess at the heart of this is that I somehow, at last, try to understand intertwining. How a plastic palm tree intertwines with dreams, chance with continuing, the everyday with colonialism, heat with cold, life with cycles, all this with everything.

This event is part of Evergreen Inner Jungle, which is a one-week exhibition by Porin kulttuurisäätö taking place in the Botanic Garden in Kaisaniemi. It explores the phenomena of exhibiting foreign plantations in a museum-like setting that has become a convention of its own. In fact, instead of presenting the current situation of the distant environments the botanical gardens globally all resemble each other. They have become representations of Botanical Gardens, exotic and dreamy-like atmospheric places with scientific purposes while also carrying colonial weight, positioned in an intersection of research, environmentalism, leisure and utilising faraway vegetation.
