Evergreen Inner Jungle is a one-week exhibition by Porin kulttuurisäätö taking place in the Botanic Garden in Kaisaniemi. It explores the phenomena of exhibiting foreign plantations in a museum-like setting that has become a convention of its own. In fact, instead of presenting the current situation of the distant environments the botanical gardens globally all resemble each other. They have become representations of Botanical Gardens, exotic and dreamy-like atmospheric places with scientific purposes while also carrying colonial weight, positioned in an intersection of research, environmentalism, leisure and utilising faraway vegetation.

The artworks of Evergreen Inner Jungle vary from installations to lectures and from ceramics to video and soundworks and look at plant processes and interdependence, and the joy in it. Artists and artist duos Océane Bruel & Dylan Ray Arnold, Tuomas Alatalo, Ramina Habibollah, Inka Kynkäänniemi & Iiris Kaarlehto are participating with commissioned site-specific works and the exhibition also includes already existing art pieces from haus de pnojekt (Anni Haunia & Rita Vaali), Nadiye Işik, Leena Reittu, Marjolein van der Loo and Eero Yrjölä. The documentation by Shubhangi Singh explores conventions and limits of exhibition documenting and will be subsequently shown as an independent artwork. Artists Lauri Linna and Anna-Sofia Sysser were invited to present lectures related to the exhibition and their ongoing research. After the challenging year of 2020 the aim was to create a platform for encounters where the location, artists, curators, researchers, public, and the concept of nature are combined. Evergreen Inner Jungle explores the possibilities arising from working together in a physical space after the year of pandemic when this was impossible. Porin kulttuurisäätö collective wanted the experience to be soft, fun, and experiential – for us making it and for you visiting it.

Evergreen Inner Jungle has been kindly supported by Kone Foundation and The Finnish Cultural Foundation, and is realized together with LUOMUS – Finnish Museum of Natural History.
