'Nightfall / Videvik' is comprised of a four-window painted installation entitled 'Päev looja läind' (The Day Has Gone) and an exhibition of related new works composed of an oversized hand-painted 62 paged bookwork called 'Videvik' and two large-scale framed paintings, 'Magama' (To Sleep) and 'Unenägu' (A Dream). Across these components, Estna pays homage to the iconic Estonian female poet and writer Lydia Koidula. Throughout Estna’s work, Koidula’s poem 'Õhturahu' (Peaceful Evening) literally takes over, intervenes and inhabits PUBLICS multiple spaces, within, and outside its windows, walls and library shelves.

Whilst employing the words of 'Õhturahu', Estna’s work also reflects upon the palpable quietness and sadness of the Covid Winter experienced by us all. The work also responds to the artist’s own harsh winter months spent in Estonia, and an extended period of coldness, isolation and fragile beauty as described in Koidula’s words as they not only speak to mourning hearts, quietness, sleep but hopefulness.

Merike Estna graduated from the painting department at the Estonian Academy of Arts (BA, 2005) and from Goldsmiths, University of London (MFA, 2009). She has received several Estonian art awards, among them the Hansapank stipend (2004), the Eduard Wiiralt Prize (2005) and Konrad Mägi Prize (2014). Her works belong to the collections of the Art Museum of Estonia and Tartu Art Museum. Estna has participated in international exhibitions in Europe, USA and Latin America. Estna is among the recipients of the national artists’ salary between 2020 and 2022.
