Welcome to the opening reception on Thursday 29 January from 5-7 pm!
The sculptures in the exhibition have been inspired by music – how music forms into a complete piece from individual sounds, pauses, jumps and cuts. Similarly, the sculptures are based on the interrelations of their parts and the whole.
The sculptures are composed of parts that echo one another and follow certain serial proportions. The rhythm and the buildup of intensity through repetition and variation are integral to the work. The main material used in the sculptures is pine, whose grain pattern generates its own rhythm in relation to the structure. The glossy lacquer finish brings out and intensifies the tonal depth of the material. The look of the pine is based on long lateral grain patterns and ties formed by the cut wood’s growth rings.
Hermanni Saarinen’s previous shows include Kontrapunkti (SIC Space, 2023) and Rakenuspaikka (Titanik, 2021). His works are in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma.
The Finnish Cultural Foundation and Kone Foundation have supported the production of the show.
