The exhibition explores traces and materials gathered from the immediate environment of a childhood backyard. The tension between the yard’s inherent order and its uncontrollable events makes it a site where matter is constantly formed anew: blackcurrant spots on cloth, food scraps scattered by magpies, and berry pulp composting at the bottom of a ditch merge into the yard’s ongoing cycle. One becomes absorbed into its matter, entangled and stained by it. Sticks carry, sand gathers, mud puddles shimmer.
The raw materials of the works are given by others or found: lake clay from a friend, berries picked with the grandmother, a sandbox frame passed on by a neighbour.
Within the backyard system, materials, smells, and appearances dissolve into one another. Has everything true already been tested in the childhood yard?
Welcome to the opening 19.5 at 17-19!
