Welcome to the exhibition’s opening reception on Thursday 3 September, from 5–7 pm!

The exhibition consists of objects that refer to the familiar elements and structures surrounding us in our built environment—structures that normally guide, support, and define our presence and movement within a space. The elements presented in the works are, however, incomplete in their own ways—the objects fail to fulfil their intended purposes. They prompt the viewer to ask what these objects do, or what they do to the viewer.

The works highlight the fluidity of the boundary between people and objects. Although people create and shape objects, objects also influence our actions and demand our physical attention. Thus, objects help define human identity, behaviour, and boundaries. As the objects in the exhibition become, in a sense, negations of their own functions, they also engage the viewer in a new way. They transcend or disrupt spatial and material order, becoming disruptive elements within an organised world. The works offer glimpses of the chaos, experiences, and emotions hidden behind external order, collectively forming a space tinged with transience and uncertainty.

Anssi Pulkkinen is a visual artist who lives and works in Helsinki. His practice centers on reflections on space, architecture, and the physical elements associated with them—their agency, temporality, fragility, and transience. Pulkkinen often utilizes familiar materials and elements from his surroundings, as well as details from everyday life. By modifying and recontextualizing these elements, he edits and reconstructs them into transformed objects and spatial compositions. His works are characterized by the stretching of physical and material boundaries, as well as by a playfulness at the interface between order and chaos.

Pulkkinen holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki. He has held solo exhibitions at venues including HAM, WIELS Centre for Contemporary Art in Brussels, Forum Box, and Galerie Anhava’s project space. In recent years, he has become particularly known for his public artworks, both in Finland and throughout the Nordic countries. He is currently creating new works for locations including Uppsala and Rykmentinpuisto in Tuusula, as well as a park-wide memorial in Kinna, Västra Götaland.
