Split in two, lopsided, and always returning to the starting point. The exhibition Going Nowhere brings together works connected by thoughts of division, the distance forming between people, and the growing fragility of shared space.

The exhibition consists of works made of steel and aluminium that borrow their forms and functions from large-scale objects and devices found in public spaces. Individual works are rooted in experiences of supporting structures disappearing, unevenness, and aimlessness. Throughout the works, however, there is a recurring sense of distance and of the impossibility of closing it.

The possibility of interacting with those unfamiliar to us is more accessible than ever. At the same time, avoiding encounters with those unfamiliar to us has been made possible to an unprecedented degree. The tools we use to seek information and communicate are increasingly individualised, and encountering those who differ from us requires active effort. Bubbles have formed within society that seem impossible to pierce gently. Both as individuals and as groups, we are often foreign to one another, outsiders and isolated.

This division is also reflected in the way we move forward. It often feels as though our progress takes place in a back-and-forth motion. Questions on which we thought we had already reached agreement return to be addressed again and again, and movement perceived as progress can at any moment turn back towards its starting point. Both alone and together, we make an enormous effort to keep moving, without anything seeming to move forward.

Eetu Huhtala (b. 1993, Äänekoski) is a sculptor living in Helsinki and working in Kerava. Huhtala’s practice consists of moving mechanical sculptures, large-scale metal sculptures, and multisensory works. His works are often based on familiar everyday objects, devices, or structures, which, through changes in their function or form, become connected to personal experiences and broader societal problems. Mechanical objects often become flawed in a distinctly human way.

Huhtala graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2021 and was awarded the Young Artist of the Year prize in 2023. His solo exhibitions have been presented at Jyväskylä Art Museum, Tampere Art Museum, Galleria Sculptor, and Project Room. His works are included in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, Tampere Art Museum, the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, the Saastamoinen Foundation, and the Heino Art Foundation. Huhtala has realised permanent public artworks in Oulu (2026) and Helsinki (2022).
