On Fear and Evil – a short film about fear and evil

Alisa Javits’ On Fear and Evil is a 25-minute short film that examines fear, evil, and the relationship between them. The work approaches the subject through people’s personal experiences and considers how fear can influence human actions and perceptions of good and evil.

What kind of fears do we carry with us? How does fear influence our actions? And can fear become the starting point for evil?

The film begins with a short, reflective prologue and ends with an epilogue. In between, there are a series of anonymous interviews in which people talk about their own experiences on the edge of fear and evil – both the evil they have done and the evil they have been forced to experience.

The stories of the interviewees, who remain faceless, highlight individual experiences, but also questions that are common to many. Where is the line between fear and evil? How do our own experiences influence how we act towards others? And can we always recognize when fear begins to guide our actions?

In the work, nature is placed alongside the inner world of man. Its scale is different: the forces of nature exist independently of man, although man is in many ways dependent on them. On this scale, the history of humanity and its evil appear small. However, in the experience of an individual person, evil can be enormous.

On Fear and Evil does not seek to provide a clear answer to what evil is or where it comes from. Instead, the work opens up a space to think about fear, responsibility, and the human capacity to do evil – as well as what happens to us when evil is directed at us.
