In the joint exhibition by Aala Nyman and Haliz Yosef at Hippolyte Studio, the artists’ two parallel perspectives intertwine into a single experience. The viewer is invited to observe the space through a limited perspective – a small peephole. The aperture acts as a screen or a window, offering a view of a physical element that remains unattainable, immobile, and beyond the reach of scrolling.
The exhibition reflects on the compulsion to understand. The installation creates a scenario where objects are viewed one at a time. Physical entry into the room is not possible – only the gaze can cross the boundary, altering the viewer’s sense of time and bodily presence. The delicate plastic sheet barring access acts more like a symbolic gesture than an actual gate or wall. Spaces inherently create boundaries, defining who gets to look and what can be seen. Dividers can take the form of transparent obstacles within structures that surround us, forcing us to pause and wait our turn.
The central exhibition image has been transformed into a three-dimensional surface as it shifted from the screen to the tiles. It has become a structure with grids, exploring the way we look. A paper-like texture remains visible on the surface of the tiles, a delicate, fuzzy veil. The path of the image leads to something beyond the reach of the eye. One must imagine what cannot be seen.
Aala Nyman (b. 1996) is a Helsinki-based artist whose work emphasises the temporality, incompleteness, and accidental occurrences of everyday objects and materials. Her diverse works span sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, textiles, and installations. Nyman’s practice often begins with a process of discovery, where things and ideas take shape through collecting, experimenting, and observing. The subtle combinations of elements evoke emotions tied to everyday habits and personal, material memories. Nyman is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts (2023) and Aalto University (2020). Nyman’s works have been exhibited in several group and collaborative exhibitions in Helsinki, and her video works have been showcased at various art festivals. She is a member of the Else Collective and one of the founders of Kyykky Gallery. www.aalanyman.com
Haliz Yosef (b. 1990, Mosul, Iraq) works with memory, cultural identity, and language. Her works manifest in the forms of moving images, sound art, sculptures, and installations. In her art, Yosef explores speculative relics and places that reveal structures often hidden from view. Haliz graduated with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2022. She has participated in several group exhibitions and festivals in Finland, including Nuoret 2023 and the URB festival curated by Kiasma Theatre in 2022 and 2024. Additionally, her works have been exhibited internationally in Sweden, Latvia, England, and South Korea. www.halizyosef.com
