Jaakko Hukkanen: Quiet encounters
With my works, I try to take you to places where I find my senses and emotions awakening and sensitizing. The places are quiet but communicate with me. They only exist on the surfaces of my canvases and papers. But when they communicate, they do still feel real.

The places I depict in my works are imaginary and born through my imagination. My imagination is shaped by the stratification of my experiences and memories. They are a mix of what I’ve seen, experienced and felt. All my encounters, my living environments and journeys, as well as the works of my art historical role models, and my own work history. I pick, mix, and combine from this archive until I feel like I have created a view of a place with the atmosphere I have coveted through its internal tensions.

To achieve the inner atmosphere of the work, I use color, rhythm, shapes, light and touch. By reducing the image, I feel I am able to delve into the remaining elements with a stronger intensity. Through this, I’m also starting to realize their potential.

At the center of my interest are the impression of spatiality created by the reduced elements as well as the emotions evoked by the spatial experience. Through sensations of peace and quiet, I strive to create a space for the viewer where they also have the opportunity to meet themselves.
