On the German-Polish border, on the Słubice side, stands what is likely the only Wikipedia monument in the world. This monument, ceremonially unveiled in 2014, was designed by Armenian artist Mikhran Hakobyan.

Wikipedia represents an international, open method of producing knowledge. But why haven’t more monuments been created or dedicated to it? Who has the right to a monument? How does a digital, free encyclopedia transform into a physical monument? While monuments are inherently public, do they truly represent openness and accessibility?

For the exhibition “A Competition for the World’s Second Wikipedia Monument” have been invited proposals from nine different artists. In addition to this, it is possible to participate in the exhibition with your own proposal in free form but limited to A3 size. If you wish, you can also bring your own proposal to the exhibition while it is open. Alternatively, you can send your proposal to: Joonas Pulkkinen, Nilsiänkatu 10 A, 00510 Helsinki. Paste “Wikipedia competition” as the title.
