The theme “Reliefs for Animals” is inspired by the current debate regarding our relationship with plants and animals, which is about how we relate to life forms other than our own – our language and attitudes, our opinions and preconceptions. The traditional view that animals only react based on reflexes and external stimuli is giving way to the realization that both plants and animals have intelligence and a will and understand much more of their surroundings than we might have thought. Charles Darwin already wrote that there is no fundamental difference between humans and higher animals in terms of their emotional, mental and moral abilities.
Reliefs for Animals is an exchange and collaboration between two artist-run galleries: Galleria Huuto, Helsinki, Finland and Galleri Rostrum, Malmö, Sweden. The exchange took shape at a meeting at the 2023 Supermarket Art Fair in Stockholm, and dialogues have since continued between the galleries. In autumn 2024, we will exhibit at each other’s galleries.
Participating artists: Ewa Berg (SE), Gisela Eriksson (SE), LiAn Artist Duo Lisa Fjellman & Anna Lönn Franko (SE), Christel Lundberg (SE), Tuss Marie Lysén (SE), Ulrika Pihlström (SE), Filip Rahim Hansson (SE)
Galleri Rostrum
Galleri Rostrum is an artist-run, non-profit gallery that annually presents a large number of exhibitions, art projects and cultural events. All members of Galleri Rostrum are active artists with varying backgrounds, nationalities and artistry.
The diversity among the members is our common strength and enables the creation of new perspectives and approaches to art creation and meetings about art. Rostrum strives to be in close dialogue with the gallery’s visitors with the aim of broadening communication on the art scene. Galleri Rostrum has an annual exhibition program with around 10 exhibitions, temporary arrangements, exchanges with other artist-run galleries and pop-up arrangements, among other things.
Thank you
Galleri Rostrum is funded by the City of Malmö and the Swedish Arts Council. This exhibition has also been funded by Letterstedtska föreningen and Kulturfonden för Sverige och Finland.
