Welcome to the exhibition opening on Thursday, March 26, from 5–7 pm
The artist is present at the gallery also on Sunday, April 19, from 2–4 pm
The theme of Antti Immonen’s exhibition is moulting – the moment when an old, stiffened form breaks open and something new and vital emerges from within. In the works, the biological process of shedding skin is paralleled with moments of change and growth in life. Rough, aged-looking surfaces are set against tighter, glossy and more controlled forms. From wrinkled and damaged shells, new structures seem to sprout.
Ecdysis is the biological term for the shedding of skin, but in Immonen’s works, science serves only as a spark for the imagination. The sculptures invite the viewer to consider transformation both as a material and as an experiential phenomenon.
The sculptures in the exhibition are made primarily of aluminium, acrylic and stainless steel. The exhibition also includes a photograph of a dragonfly emerging from its shell, which functions as the visual and conceptual point of departure for the entire exhibition.
Immonen’s artistic work has been supported by the the North Savo Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
