Picture books are often a child’s first encounter with art and literature, a way to engage with language and culture.
Meet author Dánial Hoydal and illustrator Annika Øyrabø from the Faroe Islands at our Nordic library for a conversation about creating literature within the constraints of a small language. How are their works received, who reads them, and is translation important to reach a wider audience? Lotta Westerlund, a PhD student in Nordic literature, will interview the duo.
Dánial Hoydal made his debut as an author in 2002 with the picture book Í geyma. Annika Øyrabø is an award-winning designer and illustrator who has published many picture books with several prominent authors. Together, Dánial and Annika have released the picture books Strikurnar (2022) and Abbi og eg og abbi (2021). Both titles were nominated for the Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize. Abbi og eg og abbi has also been published in Danish under the title Bedste og mig og Bedste (2022).
Lotta Westerlund is a PhD student in Nordic literature and has focused her research on rhythmic aspects of children’s poetry. This event is part of the University of Helsinki’s symposium Faroese literature – Literary translations and the periphery of Europe.
