The waves run calmly in their own rhythm, every now and then crashing into the rocks that hide in the sea. When the wave meets the rock, it returns in a different incarnation. As the wave breaks, something reveals itself for a moment – a solid thing, seated deep in the water.
As we move in the city, we meet our reflections on the polished surfaces. When walking along, the image of us changes its shape. We are the ever-changing shimmer on the walls and windows, our images become part of this scene – as are the pavements, houses, or lights.
Berit Talpsepp-Jaanisoo’s exhibition The Return of a Wave looks at the relationships between the images, narratives and objects. Combining different materials and techniques, she sees her new works as physical reflections of the inner world.
The exhibition consists of the wall-based works and sculptures. The works are based on the artist’s autobiographic and found material, such as forgotten images of the personal photo archives, some impressions from the art history, and the moulds once taken of the beloved one.
Berit Talpsepp-Jaanisoo is a Finland-based visual artist, born in Tartu, Estonia. She received her Master’s degree in the Glasgow School of Art, in 2011. Since then, she has exhibited in Finland and abroad. In her work, Talpsepp-Jaanisoo has explored the traditional and new meanings of sculptural things through different conceptual approaches, materials and techniques, expanding her practice from the three-dimensional objects to other visual art mediums.
The exhibition is supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
