On the shore of a nearby lake, there is a pit. At the bottom of the pit, there are fragments of ceramics and pieces of charcoal. I place the sculptures at the bottom and light a fire above them. I keep the fire going for a long time. Stars float on the surface of the water. The planet turns so slowly. At night, the sculptures simmer beneath the metallic dome of the sky.

In the morning, the ashes shimmer in a yellowish gray shade. With an archeologist’s caution, I brush away ash to reveal the darkened fragments and those sculptures from which the flames have licked off the soot. A beam of light moves from one space to another.

In the water, the sculptures crumble at different paces. They fall apart softly, like music. First the porous, unfired ones, then the black ones, those fired in the forest. The sculptures sigh and fall apart. Those fired in the kiln hold their breath. They remain unchanged. I bind them together. The wire rusts, burning in the water. Fire diary entries appear on the surface of the ceramics.

Enni Vekkeli earned a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences in 2018. She has had solo exhibitions in both Finland and abroad and participated in joint exhibitions, most recently at the Ääres art event in Lappeenranta (2025) and the Statuomania exhibition at Kunsthalle Seinäjoki (2025). Vekkeli’s works are included in the collections of the Finnish state and Museo Omero in Italy.
