Päivi Helander explores immersion in time and space in her award exhibition called Aikaan piirrettyjä viivoja (Lines drawn in line). She examines the relationship between the built environment, nature and humans through the means of design and text. The Graphic Designer of the Year 2025 exhibition Aikaan piirrettyjä viivoja will be on display at Luonnos from 20 September to 9 November 2025.
The exhibition Aikaan piirrettyjä viivoja, traces the layers of time – parallel, overlapping lines – and transports us on the interfaces between aesthetic experience and understanding of nature, balancing between sensitivity and melancholy.
The exhibition seeks an experience of beauty stemming from childhood and a spatial feeling permeated by history – a moment in which time and place lose their meaning. Alongside an immediate empathy of childhood rise an inevitable, fleeing hope and elements of ecological catastrophe – abandonment. Reading, watching and colours all act as a counterforce, while an escape into alternative stories offers a counterbalance to reality
Päivi Helander, Graphic Designer of the Year 2025, has curated this intimate group exhibition, where designers, artists, and writers approach a common subject: Louhisaari, a 17th-century noble manor and today a site of the National Museum of Finland, located in Southwest Finland. Louhisaari serves as the exhibition’s inspiration, research object and starting point for reinterpretation.
The exhibition is divided into two main themes: aesthetic immersion and a power relationship between nature and humans. The works capture the colours of Louhisaari, the bird paintings on the vaults of the staircase, the garden, the reeds on the shore and the retreating shoreline. The shapes are built from the spatial experience, the materials draw from natural surfaces and textures. The exhibition forms an installation in which visitors can linger to read essays about the experiences and interpretations evoked by Louhisaari. The essays have been compiled into an exhibition publication designed by Helander, which will be published in October.
The concept and architecture of the exhibition are by Päivi Helander. Helander, who was selected as the Graphic Designer of the Year 2025, is a multidisciplinary visual designer whose work ranges from colour design to publications and from spaces to events. She has the ability to assemble teams for her projects that become more than the sum of their parts – a quality that has shaped this exhibition as well.
The artists involved are ceramicist Riikka Piippo, textile artist Riikka Peltola, graphic artist Evi Rinkinen, architects Jussi Laine and Maria Klemetti Laine (Nemo architects) and photographic artist Maija Annikki Savolainen. The essays have been written by journalist and essayist Aino Frilander, geographer Julia Ajanko, curator and birdwatcher Nella Aarne and researcher of architectural history, Dr. Netta Böök.
