Catalysti was invited by the City of Helsinki to contribute to the programme of Helsinki Living Streets (Helsingin elävät kadut). In this collaboration, Catalsyti bridges the opportunity to our members and beyond through an open call. We received a total of 11 multidisciplinary projects, including live concerts, dance workshops, interactive installations, durational participatory performances, etc.

6 proposals selected by the City of Helsinki are sought to take place across the different periods of the Helsinki Living Streets Project.

Program overview:

Folk Dances with Live Music / World Music School

26.6, 1300-1600. National Museum of Finland.

The World Music School Helsinki is bringing three continents together with its Folk Dances with Live Music -event. We invite everyone to play and dance along with traditional music and dances from around the world. This event is designed for everyone, previous experience is not required. Musicians or aspiring musicians are welcome to join The World Music School Helsinki’s musicians and play traditional dance songs and learn how to perform music for the dances. Dancers will be invited to learn the steps and form of the dances by performing it together with live music. All kinds of musical instruments and dance levels are welcome. Just bring your instrument, voice and body!

This event is based on the events organized by the World Music School Helsinki which aim to connect the local cultural minorities through music and to teach through these music as a language.

Mask workshop for children with parents / Kulkijat ry 

26.6, 1300-1600. National Museum of Finland.

Fun crafts workshop for making masks for all ages! Come and use your imagination, we will provide materials, colors, and an easy technique to create your own mask. The masks will be built from recycled cardboard and materials that can be found in any household. Come and learn how to make them and then share the experience with friends and family.
The workshop is held by Kulkijat ry.

Cinta Hermo, singer-songwriter from Spain, presents “Portrait of Andalusia”, a flamenco concert specially designed for the summer cultural program of the city of Helsinki, with songs chosen from throughout his career, celebrating his 35th anniversary of his artistic career, with 16 albums and concerts in 22 countries, Woman of Gold Award granted by the International Association Wodess (Women Designed for Success), Ambassador of the Arts for the Haaga-Helia University, launches her new album “My great love story”. One sentence love stories / Olga Spyropoulou

21.7, 1600-1900. Helsinki Summer Streets.

One-sentence love stories is a durational participatory performance formed by one simple action. The performer writes continuously the phrase “And I love you, and […]” on a surface in a public space. Each time, the phrase is completed in a different way. The audience is invited to participate in the writing by using the same phrase as a departure point. The performance ends when all surfaces are covered in words.

One-sentence love stories explores the tension between public and private space and challenges which, whose, and in which form personal histories are allowed to be in the open. The performance aims to archive, honour, and monumentalize the various experiences of love. It is connected to the practice of graffiti and its uses throughout history.

Short bio:
Olga Spyropoulou (b. 1985, Athens) is a Helsinki-based performance artist and writer. In her work, she experiments with various modalities of spect-actorship and non-hierarchical methodologies. She is interested in how we relate to one another in different contexts. Her artistic research revolves around legal contracts as performance scores, with respect to both private and public commitment.
