A performance project by Dafna Maimon
Dive into the world of a living organism at the Kiasma Theatre, where Dafna Maimon’s themes from the Homebody video work come to life. Imagine a home where people, microbes, and even traces of history have lives of their own.
Interior Motives: The Musical explores both an interior world of the body-mind and the dynamics of a collective creative process. Drawing on the technique of Authentic-Stream-Of-Consciousness-Singing, developed by artist Dafna Maimon, the performance emerges through surreal meandering scenes where everyday life and the act of creating art intersect.
The musical is an evolution of two earlier versions of the project: The Household Musical, performed at Villa Skeppet in Tammisaari—the smallest private home designed by Alvar Aalto—and the 3-channel video work Homebody, currently part of Maimon’s’’ exhibition Symptoms at Kiasma.
Interior Motives: The Musical, also builds on themes from Homebody, where the home is imagined as a living organism—an interconnected space, where together with its human inhabitants, microbes roam about, and even traces of history have a life of their own. The video work featured the dualist philosopher Descartes as a miniature figure as an embodiment of existential struggle, and in the new performance iteration, this idea is expanded to consider the relationship between individual bodies and the collective body-mind of the ensemble and its audience.
This new iteration of the project invites the audience into the interiority of a creative process by bringing them “backstage” to examine more integrated ways of experiencing the world—ones that acknowledge both the joys and challenges of personal and collective perspectives.

Somatic Workshop & Exhibition Walk-through
A WORKSHOP AT 1PM, KIASMA’S SEMINAR ROOM
Inspired by themes in Dafna Maimon’s exhibition Symptoms, artist and somatic educator AD Kerton will be facilitating gentle body-sensing and movement exercises, getting you in touch with a felt-sense of your body in the present moment.
Through acknowledging how sensing and perceiving are bodily processes, this experiential workshop aims to offer participants an embodied engagement with art and artistic practices.
It is an opportunity for playful self discovery through accessible guided somatic explorations, including:
- Spatial orientation: how we orient our bodies in space and what shifts in our perception when we place awareness on different parts of our body whilst moving.
- Breathing: the relationship of our internal physical space with external space through the dynamics of our breath.
- Gut tube: getting in touch with our mouth as our ‘primary limb’ and our digestive system as a site of metabolic integration of our environment.
No previous experience with a movement practise is necessary and the workshop is open to all abilities. Please wear comfortable clothes you can move in!
Following the workshop will be the Maimon’s new performance work ‘Interior Motives: The Musical’ in the KiasmaTheatre.
Note! Limited number of participants. If you have any specific access requirements please contact sanni.pajula@kiasma.fi. The workshop will be led in English.
AD Kerton is an artist and Body-Mind Centering® Somatic Movement Educator.
