While painting, I have been thinking about sensations on the skin, squashed blueberries, and leaves rustling in the wind. My paintings do not depict anything, yet they are not entirely abstract either. Perhaps they are like small hunches or feelings, experienced somewhere between perception and imagination. For me, painting is a way to express something that cannot be said in words.
For this exhibition, I have been working with watercolors and oil paints on canvas, and I am especially fascinated by how these two materials behave together. The translucency of watercolors and the opacity of oil paints create layers, and it feels as if they were breathing.
I am very fond of artists like Hilma af Klint and Agnes Martin. Their works seem quiet and precise, as if they were in their own world, yet at the same time very much present. The combination of sensitivity and organization feels calming. I hope my own works could offer viewers something similar, a moment to pause and breathe.
Even when I am not in my studio, I collect impressions and moods. I have a digital sketchbook on my phone to draw little notes. They are important seeds for future paintings. My process is intuitive and at times quite slow, but it is always moving forward.
I am a rather sensitive person and often find myself absorbing all sorts of things from my surroundings. The pace and noise of today’s world are exhausting, so I often retreat to the forest or the seashore. Silence and small details, like light moving on a wall or a little twig on a path, speak to me more than words. In recent years, bigger questions have also occupied my mind. It worries me how harsh the world has become in many ways. I want my paintings to highlight softness, sensitivity, and taking other people and beings into consideration. I do not address these themes directly, but I believe they find their way into the paintings quietly, perhaps as a tone or rhythm. The works may serve as little reminders that kindness, connections and compassion exist amid all the hardness and coldness.
