Palais de Mari is a multisensorial performance bringing together dance, music and visual arts. A composition by Morton Feldman by the same name was the starting point for the performance.
The title of the original composition refers to an ancient Mesopotamian palace. Feldman had seen a photo of the ruins of the palace during a visit to the Louvre in Paris. The first performance of Palais de Mari took place at the studio of the painter Francesco Clemente in November 1986. The composition, originally written for the piano, will be played as an arrangement for the harpsichord in this performance.
The original score, the name and history of Feldman’s piece offer rich ground for free associations from which this performance has formed from. The way Feldman’s music uses time has allowed space to consider stillness, repetitiveness, erosion, scale and the incomprehensibility of time.
