The line is like a wave in the space. It surges and rolls, grows and swells. The hand tries to catch the rhythm of the waves, trying to achieve something similar. The shaky marks left by the pencil expand and find their place on the printing surfaces as enormous churning masses of lines. They appear as limited samples of movement and in one’s mind they extend beyond the edges, filling up the entire space.

The works rely on two techniques, as a hand-drawn line turns into printed one through serigraphy. The printing method serves as a means of processing and molding the character of the original image. The proportions, material content and environment of the drawn line change through the printing process. The outcome created at the interface between the two methods is recognizable, yet unfamiliar. Playing with size provided a starting point for the works and offered a new approach to working with line. A drawing the size of a matchbox is stretched to the extreme and becomes a surface covering the wall. The enlargement brings you closer to the core and content of the line. At the same time, you notice that it has grown into something else.

The exhibition at Galleria Huuto is an extended version of the exhibition that was on display at Galleria Uusi Kipinä in Lahti from 28 September to 16 October 2022.

Miina Aho (b. 1990) is a Helsinki-based visual artist whose work is based on reflecting on the meanings of the medium, time and material. Her works are centered around what is created at the interface between drawing and serigraphy, providing a platform for exploring repetition and color. Aho earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in the spring of 2022. She is a member of Kalasataman seripaja ry and the Association of Finnish Printmakers. Aho’s works have been on display at various joint and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Swell at Galleria Huuto is her fourth solo exhibition.
