‘Miriam Bäckström: Consumer’ is an installation in the larger gallery, consisting of new sculptural tapestry works. Helsinki audiences could last see the Swedish artist’s work in the Ars Fennica exhibition at Amos Rex in 2019. This time Miriam Bäckström (born in 1967, lives in Stockholm) has experimented with smaller formats and produced Concentric, a series of circular tapestries based on digital imagery (which in turn is based on photographs of turned white metal surfaces), and two as yet untitled sculptural tapestry works.

‘Now, in several of the works that have been produced rather fast after Covid, the question is suddenly no longer “What is an image?” We have passed through the image, we’re inside and now instead we’re asking, “What is reality?”’

– Miriam Bäckström, excerpt from interview with Kohta’s Director Anders Kreuger, November 2023
