Real is an exhibition that dives deeper than the surface of reality, plays with the boundaries of photography, unearths utopias, and looks for convergences of realities in reflections. The works in the exhibition are united by the effort to conceptualise our experience of reality. Realistic, surrealistic, abstract, and minimal figurative languages invite the viewer to interpret reality in different ways. In some of the works a move towards alternative ways of seeing, experiencing and being is in the centre, while other works look at the surrounding society and contemplate its state.

In the era of artificial intelligence, the photo exhibition is also asking: is a sharp drawing mark in the result more real than an analogue image made by hand from start to finish? Can a photograph exist without a camera? Is there something real in the photographic process itself? In some of the works, the process can be read as a water line, acid stain, random patterns, or a handwritten text, but behind every work there’s the active act of the photographer to present reality in a certain light, an effort to truly live out their inner world.

The members of the group participating in the exhibition: Oona Aleksia, Anastasija Kuzmina, Tuukka Jaromaa, Joona Möttö, Emilia Rautio, Jenni Sundqvist, Daryna Taushan, Rita Topaloglu, Karun Verma and Yue Yu.

Free entry to the exhibition

Photofuss is the Finnish Museum of Photography’s in-house collective of young artists. The group provides the opportunity to carry out photo cultural phenomena through collaborative artistry. The group is formed on an annual basis through an open call every autumn. In 2022-2023 the photographic artist Anni Hanén has been the group’s coordinator.
