‘’In search of true meaning I must descend to a place where things are not seen nor obvious. I trust my work to intuition which is like a dark cave. In this cave I cast light on a random spot and find symbols through the artistic process. These symbols represent something subconscious hence fascinating. The imagery formed in this kind of process emerges as surreal: there is something familiar but impossible regarding our perception of existence.’’

Exhibition is a series of paintings made in a process based on intuition. Stories told by the subconscious to the conscious can be seen in the works as a dialogue between figurativeness and abstraction. Stories also include collected elements from vivid dreams and intensive visual perceptions.

Some of the paintings in the exhibition are made alla prima when others are outcomes of a longer working process. By contemporarily displaying them, the span of the visual formation process becomes visible. The visual form in the paintings is organic and fractal. Sensitivity and soft colors meet aggression and disgust.

Through the process and the stories told, the crystallizing theme in the exhibition is transformation and exploration within.

Silja Kumpulainen is a Helsinki born visual artist (BCA) living in Lappeenranta. Her primary medium is intuitive painting where imagery is not defined beforehand. For her, intuition as inner knowledge, functions as a counterforce in today’s atmosphere of repressive rationalism, confrontations and extremities. Artworks created through an eruptive process tell stories of the subconscious in which mysticism and unknown dimensions play major roles and existential threat radiates as a background color.
