The midsummer sun is brazenly pouring in through the window. Summers are always full of the experience of loneliness and detachment. It’s disturbing when everywhere is so falsely beautiful. The ruthlessness of summer makes me think of painting autumn and dirt as if for protection. The hotter it is, the deeper into November the tones in my paintings change.

I often work long hours just to erase everything. I search for colors and compositions like words in a foreign language that I can’t quite pronounce or that I remember incorrectly. The seasons do their own thing in my head, creating an atlas of places I’ve imagined as safe. In September, dusk falls for the first time since summer, and the world no longer feels so out of control. In the courtyard of an abandoned holiday village, there are plastic meat crates, a shoe, and glass. As the almanac turns to October, Arcturus from The Bear Watch rises into the darkening sky.
