SONGSCAPES
Songscapes takes you on a journey of original song compositions at Vapaan Taiteen Tila. Produced by members of the Global Music department at the Sibelius Academy, this project has been running since November 2024, inviting artists to share their own music and creative visions.
The idea behind Songscapes was born from the need for a space in Helsinki’s music scene where diverse, original songs could be heard and appreciated. Though often influenced by various genres, this music doesn’t fit neatly into any one category.
In May Songscapes will invite two projects: A Handmade Sea original songs from the Song Composition Course and Ritimanta Sikuris, bringing songs from the region of the Andes mountains in South America.
A Handmade Sea
A Handmade Sea offers an approach to contemporary songwriting through the lens of eight musicians from around the globe. The concert will showcase original songs and new collaborations, offering a wide perspective on contemporary songwriting.
Ritimanta Sikuris
Sikuris Ritimanta is a Helsinki-based ensemble playing and studying endemic Andean bamboo flute traditions.
They play a variety of styles of Andean music from Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. One special aspect of this music tradition is that the melodies are played in pairs and that the collective playing is needed to generate the sound. Ritimanta means “from the snow” in Quechua and sikuri is a person who plays sikus flutes.
