Suhina Klubi serves as a platform for improvised and experimental music and sound art within Helsinki. During the year 2024, improvised music ensembles will be heard in concerts held at the Myymälä2 gallery.
In the first edition of Suhina Klubi for the fall 2024 Maja Jantar and Paul Pignon are arriving to perform as a trio with guitarist Jukka Kääriäinen
Maja Jantar is an interdisciplinary, multilingual and polysonic artist living in Isokyrö, Finland, whose work spans the fields of voice, the audio visual, ceramics, poetry, performance and visual arts. Interested in creating connections and engaging with the more than human. Collaborative – with interest in hybrid forms, ecology and arts as a form of ritual. A co-founder of the poetic group Krikri, she has been giving individual and collaborative performances throughout Europe and experimenting with poetic sound works since 1996. Her visual work has been shown in several exhibits: at the Art Book Fair, arts centre Wiels in Brussels; at Été 78 in Brussels and at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, in LA VOIX LIBERÉE a sound poetry exhibition. In/Canti, Jantar’s first solo album was released on the ERRATUM label (Paris/Barcelona) in the series VOXXX in 2022 and a duo release in collaboration with ParadiseNow will out on the Transsonic label (Mons, Belgium) in the course of 2024.
Paul Pignon. Born and grew up in the UK. Began playing jazz at 15. Studied physics at Oxford. While there made first forays into non-idiomatic improvisation (1961). Abandoned Ph.D research at Oxford in favour of music. Moved to Yugoslavia. Cofounder of the Radio Belgrade Electronic Studio. 14 years working with the Synthi 100 there, originally custom built for the Studio. Active as composer of chamber, vocal, electronic and improvised music, leading the group Interaction. In 1986 moved to Sweden, composing and developing computer music software at EMS. Member of FST and Fylkingen (board member). Producer at Fylkingen 1988-1992. Active as composer of electronic and instrumental works, and real-time composer on single reeds, didgeridoo, recorders, WX5, voice, laptop; currently with BOP, SoundQuartet, BONON, 2+ (with Liisa Pentti), The Great Learning Orchestra, π with Virpi Pakhinen and Amit Sen, and many ad hoc ensembles in Sweden and around the world.
Jukka Kääriäinen is a musician focused on experimental music. Depending on the situation, Jukka’s instruments of choice include an acoustic guitar with preparations or an electric guitar with a bag full of effects. Kääriäinen has performed in many European countries and at international festivals in the United Kingdom, Spain, and France. In addition to solo concerts, he regularly performs in bands and has collaborated with many leading European improvisers such as Teppo Hauta-Aho, Kalle Kalima, Harri Sjöström, Axel Dörner, Kriton Beyer, Rieko Okuda, Anil Eraslan, Mikko Innanen, and Joel Grip, premiering works by composers such as Riikka Talvitie, Sebastian Hilli, Sami Klemola, Clara de Asis, and Tytti Arola.
