PUBLICS Youth Advisory Board welcomes you to The Observer Effect, an evening to discuss the role and politics of the moving image in documenting and understanding our present.

Our Youth Board will be in conversation with artist Shubhangi Singh, looking back at their work together and screening their short films: Hostile Architecture a video performance by Kaius Kuhmonen and Joanna Lagerblom, How long until home? a short film by Akanksha Bhat, Yelyzaveta Babaieva and Linh Dan Vu, and the double video-portrait The Observer Effect by Matilda Järvi and Yu Yue.

We are premiering The Future Futures Talk Show, three episodes where young creatives, artists and filmmakers discuss how film can redirect our gazes. Filmed at Konstfack, Stockholm in November 2024, the Talk Show brings together the members of Index Teen Advisory Board, PRAKSIS Teen Advisory Board and PUBLICS Youth Advisory Board, in conversation with Vanja Sandell Billström, Roxy Farhat and Malin Hüber.

PUBLICS Youth Advisory Board 2024 is Akanksha Bhat, Arnav Ghurde, Helena Massuda Garcia, Isabella Oropeza, Joanna Lagerblom, Kaius Kuhmonen, Linh Dan Vu, Matilda Järvi, Yelyzaveta Babaieva, and Yu Yue.

Shubhangi Singh‘s practice often draws upon existing knowledges to address movement, identity, queries related to the body and its relationship with the environment. Singh considers ideas of absence and absenting in her work as a way of reflecting upon what is visible, particularly in relation to history, memory and the labour of memorialising. Working across media, from text to moving image and site-specific installations, Singh’s works are routinely suspended between fiction and non-fiction, often adopting the position of an unreliable narrator

Vanja Sandell Billström works as an artist and filmmaker and graduated in 2014 with a MFA from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. With both documentary methods and active stagings, she often uses the everyday as a practice, where the filming itself is part of the thinking process. Her work has been nominated at different film competitions at festivals like Göteborg Film Festival, Tempo Documentary festival, Stockholm Film Festival and Uppsala Int. Short film festival. As well as exhibited at different art venues such as Göteborg Konsthall, Supermarket Art Fair, Galleri Box and Färgfabriken.
