Participants in the TYPEHAMMER workshop use hammers to drive nails into a wooden block, creating the shape of a letter or symbol of their choice. They then string threads between the nails to fill in the inner space. Alternatively, they can hammer nails to fill the entire letter shape.

As a result, besides a fun – you’ll create perhaps reminiscent of childhood – moment, an interesting and possibly even beautiful artwork!

Steps

1. Choose the type of letter and symbol.
2. Outline the symbol on the wooden board with a pencil.
3. Hammer nails along the outline with your desired density.
4. Connect the nails with threads, casually or neatly, using one or multiple colours until satisfied.
5. Admire!

The workshop is led by Tuija Tarkiainen, the founder of Studio Kiss, a graphic designer with a Master of Arts in Art and Philosophy, and one of the founding members of TypoCraft Helsinki.
