A Life of Its Own looks at habits through the subtle yet persistent forces of repetition, routine, and control. It moves within the inherent tension and dual nature of habitual patterns, tracing how the seemingly mundane gestures of everyday life become places we inhabit – temporary, but anchoring, rhythmic, but porous. Drawings, photographs, objects, and sound hint at how habits inscribe themselves into us, into our environment and into time, each drop folding into the inevitable stream of who we are becoming, the traces we are leaving. Memory, making and place interweave and reflect on the balance between holding on and letting go, between seeking and adapting. The exhibition creates the state of seeing through, where life phases, much like movement within movement, slip from their stillness and become transparent layers in an ever-changing landscape.
Valentina Černiauskaitė is a Lithuanian visual artist and storyteller working at the intersections of contemporary art, publishing, and writing. Through the exploration of time, memory, relationships, and fragility, her work looks into the nature of storytelling and ways in which our perception is shaped. Her approach develops around nonlinear, fragmented ways of working with narratives, often moving between the personal and the broader cultural context. Following the frictions between time, space, connection, and independence, her practice is driven by observing and responding to rhythms beyond the human scale. Černiauskaitė holds a BA in Graphic Art from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with an exchange year at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki. She currently lives and works in Helsinki.
Juozapas Švelnys, born in Vilnius, Lithuania, is an artist and designer currently based in Helsinki. His practice spans across sound, installation, video, and graphic media. His work investigates the dynamics of sensory intake, especially listening, as a way of understanding the layered relationships between individuals, locations, and collective experiences. Švelnys often works with field recordings, sound walks, and other sonic practices to reflect on how today’s world is changing the way we hear and listen. With a background in graphic arts, Švelnys received his BA and MA degrees from the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
