The Pop-up VR Museum invites users to access, interact, and engage virtually with objects from the collection of Design Museum Helsinki and personal stories that are linked to them. The experimental VR application is a joint project of the museum and the Aalto University, and it is co-designed with user communities.

Senior citizens, Finnish language learners and other communities have contributed stories and their life memories about Finnish design objects. In this workshop lead by computer research experts, we will explore the data structures of the Pop-up VR Museum and visualizations based on community models. These include the ontologies used in defining the artefacts such as materials taxonomies, values and emotions extracted from the stories, clustering algorithms, and more.

This workshop is part of SPICE (Social cohesion, Participation, and Inclusion through Cultural Engagement), an EU Horizon 2020 funded project (2020–2023) wherein information processing tools and methods are developed to assist different communities in sharing their perspectives of museum artefacts and cultural heritage as well as in gaining a better understanding of others.
