“Time and events on the island form a unit of their own. A transparent image in which different layers overlap and shine through one another.”— Pira Cousin
The Nomadic Academy of Experimental Arts, which operated on Harakka Island from 2009 to 2026, is publishing a risograph-printed booklet documenting a historic turning point in the island’s artistic community.
In 2026, Harakka Island is undergoing a significant transformation. As new fixed-term agreements come to an end, all of the island’s longest-standing studio artists are being required to leave their workspaces. At the same time, 38 years of accumulated tacit knowledge and collective memory will disappear from the island.
LIGNES DE FUITE – PAON VIIVAT is an art publication, a trace, and a time capsule that brings together writings, images, and artistic gestures created in the moment just before this change. At the same time, the publication looks toward the future and wishes fair winds to the artists who will come to Harakka in the years ahead.
Edited by artist-researcher Kari Yli-Annala, the publication includes articles by aesthetics researcher Dr. Janne Vanhanen and philosophy translator Anna Nurminen (Researcher Association / Tutkijaliitto), as well as contributions from artists Annette Arlander, Harriina Räinä, Tiio Suorsa, Walter Götsch, Noora Geagea, Joonas Jokiranta, EGS, Sirkku Ala-Harja, Aoi Yoshizawa, Johanna Suonpää, Marika Maijala, Liisa Kallio, Lin Wan Qian, Kastehelmi Korpijaakko, Noora Sandgren, Heikki Mäntymaa, Sara Kovamäki, filmmakers Milja Viita, Lasse Vairio, and Müge Yildiz, and poets Sini Silveri and Karri Kokko. The contributors are united by a living connection to Harakka Island through their artistic practice or through events organized by the Nomadic Academy between 2010 and 2026.
LIGNES DE FUITE – PAON VIIVAT has been produced using risograph printing, an environmentally friendly printing technique developed in Japan in the 1980s. Characterized by layering, luminous colors, and small print-specific variations, the method ensures that each copy is slightly unique. Published in an edition of only 150 copies, the booklet is not only an artistic publication but also a rare document of a major turning point in the history of Harakka Island’s artistic community—a moment that can never be reconstructed afterward.
The publication’s graphic design was assisted by Samuli Saarinen, and it was printed by If By Magic (Robin Ellis) in Vuosaari, Helsinki. The publication year is 2026, and the ISBN is 978-952-88-1954-7. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Finnish Art Society (Signe Tandefeld Grant), the Arts Promotion Centre Finland under the Arts and Culture Agency, and the Olga and Vilho Linnamo Foundation.
LIGNES DE FUITE – PAON VIIVAT leaves a trace of a disappearing moment while opening space for what is yet to come.
