Wisdom shimmered in your topaz eyes though you said nothing at all
and had you spoken, I might not have understood
but perhaps
perhaps
you would have drawn star charts upon my eyelids.

The works in this exhibition explore different forms of departure and detachment, both concrete and symbolic.

I think of the works as palimpsests, rewritings layered over another image, thought, or memory. An earlier image shows through, offering suggestions of what came before. The works remember something that can no longer be fully seen, moving between perception and archaeological time. They evoke marbles, the passage of time, human relationships, snakes and slow worms, mountain ranges, floor plans, and halves of apples.

Juliana Hyrri (b. 1989) is an Estonian-born painter and comics artist. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2023. Hyrri’s work has recently been exhibited at the Sara Hildén Art Museum, Tikanoja Art Home of the Vaasa Museums, Makasiini Contemporary, and Orimattila Art Museum. Her works are included in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Riihisaari – Savonlinna Museum, the Nelimarkka Fund, and the cities of Ylöjärvi and Kangasala, among others. In 2023, Hyrri was awarded the State Prize for Comics and Illustration.

Artistic practice has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
