Opening 3.9.2026, 17-20

In Tanja Koljonen and Juuso Noronkoski’s exhibition, numbers, letters, and photographs come together, allowing the predetermined course of things to be called into question. The exhibition title, Selityksiä (Explanations), comes from Koljonen’s artist’s book of the same name. An excerpt from the book spreads onto the gallery walls, entering into dialogue with Noronkoski’s photographic series.

The apparent disorder of signs and numbers in the exhibition resembles the way we read an image rather than a text. Instead of being read in a fixed sequence, the signs can be approached in different orders and directions. In Noronkoski’s photographic series, by contrast, one moment leads to the next. The person holding on has a direction in mind, but once their grip is released, control has already been lost.

Tanja Koljonen graduated from the MA Programme in Photography at Aalto University (2014) and from the
Academy of Fine Arts’ Printmaking programme (2024). Her works often take the form of artist’s books that expand into spatial installations. Her practice explores the relationship between written language and image, and how they shape ways of reading and seeing. Working with found materials, she uses removal, covering and rearrangement
to create new visual rhythms.

Juuso Noronkoski is a visual artist based in Helsinki. He graduated from the MA Programme in Photography at Aalto University in 2015. His practice combines photography, video, sound, sculpture and writing. His work focuses on how images acquire meaning and how reading images is shaped through space, time and material presence. Noronkoski’s work has been exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions in Finland, Germany and Japan. In 2024,
he received the State Prize for Photographic Art in Finland.
