In my animation Underwater World, fish swim in the sky. The story is about a camping trip I went on with a friend years ago. It rained, and it felt as though we were living under the surface of an ocean. We pitched a tent, played guitar, and sheltered from the rain.

My animation is based on home videos I recorded during that trip. Ordinary, even seemingly insignificant moments gain new dimensions as the years go by. The animation consists of fragmentary diary entries that carry the story forward. Time is cyclical in my work, and the same moments recur throughout the film. Memories stay alive and come back.

I am interested in the relationship between the present and the past. My animation falls somewhere between a documentary and an animation, realism and nostalgia. Not everything I depict in the animation happened exactly as I now remember it. The place is not clearly identifiable: the animation blurs the exact coordinates of time and place.

The work includes both small and large scales – close-ups of flowers, an airplane in the sky, a satellite in space. The landscape has stories that it does not tell to a passerby. What does the landscape remember – and what do we remember through the landscape?
