The performance starts at 14:00 at MUU Helsinki Contemporary Art Centre (Cable Factory, Tallberginkatu 1 C, Helsinki), and ends at MUU window (Jätkäsaari, Välimerenkatu 15, Helsinki). The event lasts approximately 30 minutes.
“Tip of the Iceberg” by Helinä Hukkataival, honorary member of MUU, has been the first exhibition of MUU Window in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki.
The exhibition has been an archaeological excavation into the career of the performance artist going back 30 years. In the video works and photographs, the artist appears immersed in her practice, whether on the streets of Rome or within the Finnish landscape.
Closing event of the exhibition will be the performance “Burning Ice” on Sunday 30 March at 2:00 PM. The performance starts at the Cable Factory and ends at the MUU ikkuna exhibition space in Jätkäsaari. The performance will last approximately 30 minutes.
“Tip of the Iceberg” exhibition features only a small part of Helinä Hukkataival’s performances created over the course of over thirty years. Hukkataival’s works have been either one-off performances or performances for the camera.
At the Cable Factory, the “iceberg” is packaged and transported to Jätkäsaari, where it disappears – just as real icebergs are unfortunately also disappearing in the global warming climate.
Helinä Hukkataival (b. 1941) graduated as a visual arts teacher in 1966, and began exhibiting alongside her teaching in 1969. From 1990, she shifted her focus to performance art, later expanding into photography and video art. Helinä Hukkataival received the Finnish State Award for Visual Arts in 2004.
As a performance artist, Hukkataival appears in her own works, often in the role of Martha, wearing a black dress and scarf – the traditional outfit of an elderly person. The images depict Martha engaged in everyday tasks typically performed by women, tasks that too often go unnoticed.
