Warm welcome to the opening Wednesday 4.2.2026 from 17.00-19:00 at Galleria Loisti!
Red as the colour of love and blood is a multisensory installation that questions dominant birth tropes in mainstream media. Seeking alternatives to the overused portrayals of rushed, screaming births, Neilson gathered stories from friends. These accounts offer insight into personal experiences that are often left unspoken, forming just a small drop in the vast ocean (or pool) of birth stories.
The installation invites viewers to reflect on who controls the stories we absorb through media, and how these narratives can shape ideas and subconscious fears. A heartbeat connects the work to the viewer, grounding the listener and inviting stillness—a reminder of the first sounds we all hear. The exhibition soundscape was created in collaboration with Tyler Fitzmaurice of Studio Coara.
Dana Neilson is a Helsinki-based visual artist, producer, and curator working with installation, moving image, and ceramic sculpture. Her site-responsive practice often explores misinterpretation and the limits of digital communication. She holds an MA from Aalto University and her work has been exhibited internationally in Europe and North America.
