JARI JÄRNSTRÖM: MOMENT – PAINTINGS

I start my painting process with acrylic and spray paint, using the technique of action painting, which creates free abstraction and where momentariness can come to the fore. I use the wet-on-wet technique. From there, I continue with oil colours more slowly and carefully. The abstract and the figurative meet in the same picture. The themes and subjects of my works are man and humanity, as well as various references to space and popular culture. As reference material, I use images found on the internet, which I fade so that the origin of the image is beyond recognition.

My solo exhibition “Moment” at Galleria A2 in Helsinki consists of paintings created last year. I have now strived for an airy and fresh colour impression after many years of using the colour brown. The colour black brings contrast to the composition beside the pastel shades. The human figures in my paintings are absorbed in their own thoughts and surrounded by a mist of colour.

Jari Järnström is a painter from Helsinki (b.1960 in Lahti) who has studied visual arts at Orivesi High School (Department of Fine Arts), at Kankaanpää Art School and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (now University of Arts Helsinki, Academy of Fine Arts) graduating as a Master of Fine Arts in 2003.

In recent years, Järnström has held about one solo exhibition a year and participated in several collective and group exhibitions in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, the United States and Japan. Järnström’s most recent solo exhibitions were held at Galerie Pleiku in Berlin from 22 March to 2 April 2022 and at Art Center Almintalo in Loviisa from 25 October to 13 November 2022.
