Kari Yli-Annala’s videoessay-installation Osakkaat, tuottajat, kuluttajat ja muut displays two video works situated both horizontally and vertically in the space. The work is an independent sub-part of Yli-Annala’s Kínima (or Kínimata) project, inspired by the relationship between planetary motion and the moving image, expressing a kind of leisure or respite from the entirety.

The word kínima is Greek (κίνημα) and means movement. Kínimata is its plural form. Unlike mainstream film narratives that rely on the seamless continuity of space and time through editing, this work employs a non-linear approach by merging separate images in a discontinuous manner. This technique highlights the abruptness of endings and the transience of life as the images shift and vanish, intimating the disappearance of worlds and the death of individuals and species. The images in the work and the transitions between them offer perspectives into both the connection and separateness of the movements that occur within the same life cycle.

Yli-Annala employs the words used in the exhibition title to relate to their use in the field of economic theory, as well as to biology, when speaking about organisms in the food chain. In his work, the artist wants to challenge the viewer, who is complicit in the adverse entanglements of the food chain by a living standard that goes beyond basic necessities—to reflect on their connection with the less fortunate stages of the life cycles depicted in the artwork.

Kari Yli-Annala is a visual artist, moving image researcher, curator, and teacher. After graduating with a Master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts, he completed postgraduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Aalto University. His works have been presented at various exhibitions and festivals in Finland and abroad. Yli-Annala is the founder of the pedagogical Nomadic Academy of Experimental Arts project and a founding member of the FixC cooperative of Finnish moving image artists. He was the artistic director of AAVE – Alternative Audiovisual Event festival (2010–2018), which assembled film performances of analogue photochemical cinema, digital live cinema, multi-arts performances, workshops, and public participation projects. In 2017, he was awarded the AVEK award.

The exhibition has been supported by the Arts Promotion Center Finland (Taike). The post-production of the material presented in the work and shot in Palestine was made possible with the support of the Olga and Vilho Linnamo Foundation.

Thanks also to: Hazem al Sharif, Hannu Nuotio, the animals, plants and others appearing in the work.
The Taiwanese-born, Berlin-based sound artist Wan-Qian Lin is responsible for part of the work’s soundscape.
