Musica Nova festival’s concert combines puppetry, instrument-making and new technology.
Traditional craftsmanship of instrument construction and cutting-edge technology meet in a musical hall of mirrors, where the guitar struggles to break free from its traditional Spanish role, with varying results. The theatre of objects adds a palpable dimension to the work in which objects brush along and against the grain of sound, and the guitar, too, is handled in novel ways.
The piece is performed on an active acoustic guitar that Kumela has been involved in developing as part of an inter-Nordic project organised by the Academy of Finland. The instrument is a classical concert guitar with microphones and actuators installed inside the body. It still works as an acoustic concert instrument, but with enhanced features and surprising soundscapes.
