What can performance art achieve in today’s world and society?
In contemporary art, performance is an art form that challenges traditional ways of experiencing and defining art. Performance art seeks different and atypical places for presenting art, and thus seeks to redefine where art can exist and who can interact with it.
The exhibition Sidewalk 1st Edition at Gallery K explores these questions by presenting videotaped performances of the Sidewalk art project. The project was planned and implemented by the working group The Other Side (Aman Askarizad & Parsa Kamehkhosh). Their idea required participants, so Vantaa-based people who did not necessarily have any previous experience in art were sought through an open call. In the art project, a diverse group of Vantaa residents participated in workshops led by performance artist Tomasz Szrama, and carried out their own performances. The performances were formed on the basis of the participants’ experiences and personality, as well as societal issues. They explore interaction in Vantaa, in both urban spaces and nature.
The exhibition Sidewalk 1st Edition, co-hosted by The Other Side and Artsi, celebrates performance art’s potential to engage people and create meaningful, shared experiences.
Artsi invites all city residents to the opening of the exhibition on Thursday 10 October 2024 17.00–19.00 at Galleria K (Asematie 7, Tikkurila). The opening ceremony will feature a performance by artist Roi Vaara.
