Alternative Northern Voice in Between Worlds —
Her genre-bending fusion folk sonic poetry is gentle and strong, a grounding force. Her voice, electronics and mandolin weave a web of enchanting worlds. For her song weaving is reframing the consciousness; to catch a song and share it is for her a ceremony that carries through altered states of consciousness, transforming energy and time. For her it’s her compass.
She released her trilingual debut album Väki year 2023, and that album is a celebration of numerous different kinds of international collaborations — and life force, ’väki’, old pre-Finnish word for a similar energy such as ’chi’.
Teea Aarnio has lived in many cities and in different countries. With her sonic scapes she journeys bridging different worlds; song weaving meeting improvisation; acoustic meeting electronic; musicianship meeting embodiment; composing meeting ceremony; human world meeting the more-than-human.
About Songscapes
Songscapes takes you on a journey of original song compositions at Vapaan Taiteen Tila. Produced by members of the Global Music department at the Sibelius Academy, this project has been running since November 2024, inviting artists to share their own music and creative visions.
The idea behind Songscapes was born from the need for a space in Helsinki’s music scene where diverse, original songs could be heard and appreciated. Though often influenced by various genres, this music doesn’t fit neatly into any one category.
While the term “singer-songwriter” or the Spanish “Cantautor/a” may come close, Songscapes explores a broader sonic landscape. Over the past year, we’ve experienced a wide range of compositions, each unique in its style and story.
